"Building a Culture of Innovation" (5 minutes)
Randy Goldsmith, a foremost expert in
technology commercialization and local capital formation, is President
and CEO of the Mississippi Technology Alliance (MTA), a non-profit
organization that champions innovation-based economic development. With his leadership, the MTA is implementing a process to build the
culture of innovation in Mississippi by creating statewide public-private
partnerships and a statewide angel network, training entrepreneurs in
attracting investor capital, helping high-tech manufacturers improve
their bottom line and accelerating university research commercialization. He discusses the six ingredients
necessary to build a culture of innovation and emphasizes that every community
has access to some or all these ingredients to maximize their
innovation potential. Most
important community assets are champions of the process who have a
vested interest and a passion for the success of the community. With their help, community resources,
once identified, can be deployed and gaps in resources can be filled to
begin creating high performance companies that employ highly skilled
workers who add significantly higher than average value to the
production process. The payoff
for communities that make these efforts include increases in numbers of
new angel investors and new technology companies, available growth
capital, overall growth in wealth and other important success
indicators in the innovation economy.
